1997 Hurricanoans, AAU Champions, RBI Southwest Regional Champions, World Series Runners-Up

1997 AAU Champions / RBI Southwest Regional Champions / World Series Runners-Up · Record: 29-1

1997 AAU Champions

A 29-1 Record. Two Future MLB Stars. One Team Martin Built.

In 1997, Martin Stringer managed a Houston-area team that went 29-1 on the season, winning the AAU Championship and the RBI Southwest Regional Championship, and finishing as World Series Runners-Up.

On that team: Carl Crawford, who would go on to become a 6-time MLB All-Star, and Jason Bourgeois, who played for multiple Major League organizations. Martin didn't just coach winners, he developed players who went on to prove it at the highest level.

That team is a snapshot of what Martin has done for 40 years: take players with potential and build them into players with careers.

Letters of Commendation

In Their Own Words.

Travis Coleman
Professional MLB Scout since 2014 · 2× World Series Champion (Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros) · Drafted & signed 30+ players, 6 reaching the Major League level · Owner, The Prospect Lab

I met Martin Stringer while playing at Auburn University with his son Philip Stringer. Mr. Stringer changed my life by showing me how to truly identify, evaluate, and develop players in an organized and elite manner. I had not met someone as an African American man who had done what I was looking to do, and he had it so professionally documented that it was astonishing.

From this foundation of tutoring and mentoring, I have been able to build a professional career that I am very proud of. And each player and family that I have the pleasure of helping guide is truly benefiting from the seeds of wisdom that Martin Stringer planted in me many years ago. He still pours wisdom as a baseball professional and man to this day.

Martin Stringer is simply a treasure to baseball and this world, for anyone who listens to him, their lives are enhanced for the better.
James A. Darden II
Community & Business Leader · Parent of Jeffery-Todd 'JT' Darden · Cypress, TX · December 2025

When JT first entered Martin's world nearly three years ago, he was a gifted, highly athletic teenager, 14 or 15 years old, with tremendous raw potential, explosive speed, and natural instinct, yet without someone who truly knew how to draw that potential out. That changed the moment he connected with Martin.

Martin began working closely with JT on agility, explosiveness, base running, and the mechanics required to maximize speed with intelligence. He transformed JT from a high-contact hitter into a legitimate power threat, capable of changing the game with one swing. He taught him to command the outfield at a level that has made JT one of the strongest outfielders in Texas.

If you want a coach who sees potential where others see problems, who develops character, discipline, confidence, and mental strength, then you cannot find a more committed or impactful coach than Martin Stringer. Our son is living out his dream, and Martin played a major role in making that possible.
JT Darden will be attending Oklahoma State University in the fall on a full ride scholarship to play baseball.

Parents of Matthew Scott · Houston, TX · August 2002

Matthew's goal for his senior year was to study hard and play good baseball in order to receive a scholarship from Southern University. His high school coach decided mid-season to bench seniors, and Matthew sadly ended his senior year with no statistics to send. Defeated and losing hope, we contacted Martin Stringer.

You recognized Matthew's talent and took affirmative action to ensure his baseball career continued. The Saturday night call you made inviting him to the Devil Rays' tryout camp started a wonderful ripple effect, scholarship offers from multiple universities followed. He accepted a scholarship from Southern University and is now full of hope.

Thank you, and we hope and pray that you can continue making young men and women's dreams come true.

I am pleased to recommend Coach Martin Stringer for his dedication in the preparation of young athletes. His philosophy on core values and discipline for young athletes is one of the best I have seen. He was organized, efficient, and willing to do whatever was needed to prepare my son Nate for his spring baseball season.

He has researched not only what it takes for an athlete to be successful in sports, but in life outside the sports arena as well. Coach Martin Stringer deserves serious consideration as a very dedicated individual to the sport of baseball and athletic development, I recommend him highly.
Royce Kennedy
Former Head Baseball Coach · Concordia High School

It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Martin Stringer. Throughout the time I've had the opportunity to know and work with him, he has consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to develop hitters, mentor student-athletes, and positively impact the culture of any program that he is a part of.

Coach Stringer possesses a deep understanding of hitting mechanics and player development. He has an outstanding ability to break down each hitter's swing, identify strengths and weaknesses, and communicate adjustments in a way that athletes understand and can immediately apply. His instruction is based on sound fundamentals and excels at building confidence in his players.

Coach Stringer is also an outstanding teammate within the coaching staff. He communicates effectively, prepares diligently, and always places the success of the program ahead of personal recognition. Perhaps most importantly, Coach Stringer serves as a mentor, a teacher of accountability, discipline, perseverance, and respect. His influence helps develop not only better baseball players but also young men of character.

Any program fortunate enough to have him on staff will gain a knowledgeable instructor, a hard worker, and a coach who genuinely invests in the success and well-being of his athletes.
